Water, Dilution& Texture
Proofing, composition & sensory balance.
High-strength spirit does not become finished vodka until its alcohol level is reduced. Water changes the final composition of the liquid — and lowering the ethanol concentration can also change how aroma, alcohol heat and texture are perceived.

Water becomes part of the vodka
After rectification, the spirit is usually far stronger than its final bottling strength. Water is added to bring the alcohol level down.
Rectification produces a concentrated spirit with a high proportion of ethanol.
The producer adds water that has been selected and treated for the intended final composition.
Why this matters
Once the spirit is reduced to bottling strength, water represents a substantial part of what is in the bottle. That makes water preparation a real production decision, not simply a final calculation.
When a vodka brand talks about its water, separate two questions: Where did the water come from? and how was it prepared before dilution?
Source and treatment are different questions
Spring, well, municipal or glacial describes where water came from. Treatment describes what the producer did to prepare it for use.
Physical filtration can remove suspended material before the water is used.
Carbon may be used as part of water treatment, depending on the starting water.
Ion-exchange systems can reduce or replace selected mineral ions in the water.
Pressure pushes water through a membrane, producing water with a lower dissolved-mineral load.
The producer is aiming for consistency
Water treatment depends on the water that is available and the composition the producer wants. A dramatic source story does not tell you, by itself, what the final dilution water contains.
“Pure water” is not a useful flavour description on its own. Ask what purity means in that production system: fewer particles, fewer dissolved minerals, microbial control, or a combination of treatments.
Reducing the alcohol strength
Proofing is the controlled addition of water to bring high-strength spirit to the intended alcohol level.
The producer measures the spirit before calculating how much water is needed.
Water and spirit are blended until the liquid approaches the target composition.
The finished strength is measured rather than assumed from simple volume arithmetic.
One useful Diploma-level point
Ethanol and water do not behave like two perfectly additive volumes. When they are mixed, the final volume can be slightly smaller than the two starting volumes added together. Producers therefore work from measurements and proofing calculations, then verify the final strength.
For bartenders, the important point is not the production calculation. It is understanding why the producer measures, mixes and checks rather than simply adding a fixed volume of water.
Dilution changes what you perceive
The purpose of proofing is to reach the intended alcohol strength, but changing ethanol concentration can also change the way the liquid is perceived.
Changing the ethanol-to-water balance can change how some aroma compounds move from the liquid into the air above the glass.
Lower alcohol concentration generally reduces the strength of the warming or burning sensation.
Changing alcohol concentration changes the liquid composition, which can alter perceived weight and mouthfeel.
Think composition, not magic
Dilution does not create quality by itself. It changes the environment in which ethanol and aroma compounds are experienced. The final result still depends on the spirit that was made before the water was added.
This is why adding a little water to a high-strength spirit can reveal a different aroma balance. The same principle helps explain why a vodka can feel different at different bottling strengths.
Minerals can matter — but avoid flavour rules
Dissolved minerals change water composition. Their sensory effect depends on the actual water, the spirit and the concentrations involved.
Calcium, magnesium, sodium and other dissolved ions can vary significantly from one source to another.
Ion exchange or reverse osmosis can reduce the importance of the original mineral profile.
A mineral claim does not automatically prove that a vodka will be softer, creamier or higher quality.
Keep the evidence level clear
Research shows that dissolved salts can influence alcohol-related sensory perception under some conditions. That is enough to say water composition can matter. It is not enough to turn a mineral name into a fixed tasting note.
Water composition can influence the final liquid, but do not predict a vodka’s texture from the water source alone.
Resting and final balance
Once water and spirit are combined, the producer still has to confirm that the liquid is at the intended strength and ready for the next finishing stage.
Prepared water is blended with the high-strength spirit.
A producer may hold the diluted spirit before final checks or further finishing. This is a production choice, not a universal vodka rule.
Alcohol level and the intended sensory profile are confirmed before the liquid moves forward.
